South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for preparing, tanning or working hides, skins or leather exports, with a CAGR of +7.8% from 2012 to 2022. Tanzania and Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Tanzania (+8.7 p.p.) and South Africa (+7.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 70%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+63.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of machinery for preparing, tanning or working hides, skins or leather imported in SADC reduced rapidly to X units, which is down by -60.6% compared with the year before. In general, imports saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 302%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, hide preparing machinery imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 115%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the largest importer of machinery for preparing, tanning or working hides, skins or leather, mixing up 63% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X units), creating a 17% share of total imports. Namibia (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Angola (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Mauritius (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hide preparing machinery imports into South Africa stood at -3.9%. At the same time, Madagascar (+19.4%), Namibia (+10.0%), Mauritius (+4.1%) and Zimbabwe (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.4% from 2012-2022. Angola experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Madagascar (+15 p.p.), Namibia (+3.1 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-2.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
