Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 110% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tobacco making machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 350%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporter of machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was approx. 72% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), constituting a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zimbabwe (X units), Namibia (X units) and Tanzania (X units) - together made up 9.4% of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco exports, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Namibia (-1.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-10.5%) and Zimbabwe (-30.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Tanzania increased by +67 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest tobacco making machinery supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 1.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 1% share.

In South Africa, tobacco making machinery exports increased at an average annual rate of +14.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+7.5% per year) and Zimbabwe (-24.7% per year).

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 324%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +18.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 77%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
