South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was near 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X units), creating a 7.7% share of total exports. Tanzania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to food manufacture machinery exports from South Africa stood at -8.8%. At the same time, Namibia (+15.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012-2021. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 67%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of machinery for the preparation or manufacture of food or drink, when their volume increased by 116% to X units. Overall, imports recorded a tangible expansion. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, food manufacture machinery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Angola (X units), Botswana (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Zambia (X units), Mozambique (X units) and South Africa (X units) was the key importer of machinery for the preparation or manufacture of food or drink in SADC, comprising 88% of total import. Tanzania (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of +25.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Zambia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 67% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Botswana, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Botswana, with a CAGR of +22.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
