In 2022, Lesotho (X units) represented the largest importer of machines for making bags, sacks or envelopes of paper or paperboard, mixing up 47% of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X units) and Zambia (X units) - each accounted for a 6.2% share of total imports.

Imports into Lesotho decreased at an average annual rate of -6.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Angola (+23.1%), Zimbabwe (+23.1%), Tanzania (+15.1%) and South Africa (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+16 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+11 p.p.), South Africa (+5.2 p.p.) and Angola (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia and Lesotho saw its share reduced by -6.5% and -24.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest paper bag machine importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Angola ($X), together comprising 91% of total imports.

Angola, with a CAGR of +78.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -8.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 50%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Lesotho ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+46.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
