The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 341% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X units) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2021.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machines for the manufacture of masks and reticles, semiconductor devices or electronic integrated circuits exports, with a CAGR of -30.3% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 2,521%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, reticle manufacturing machine imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 80% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), generating a 9.3% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X units) and Malawi (X units) - together made up 5.2% of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of machines for the manufacture of masks and reticles, semiconductor devices or electronic integrated circuits. At the same time, Angola (+25.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-9.2%) and Malawi (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
