The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, malt production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -0.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of malt exported in SADC reached X tons, growing by 2.9% against 2021. Total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -0.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the main exporter of malt, constituting 63% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+183.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +183.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-6.1%) and Zimbabwe (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Namibia and South Africa increased by +20 and +17 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest malt supplier in SADC, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 12% share.
In South Africa, malt exports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+160.7% per year) and Mauritius (-3.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 25%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Malt Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, overseas purchases of malt decreased by -1.2% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 16%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, malt imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 24%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Angola (X tons) represented the key importers of malt in 2022, accounting for approx. 25% and 23% of total imports, respectively. Tanzania (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports. Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of +4.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest malt importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Mozambique and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.
Among the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +6.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
