Over the period under review, exports posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, maltodextrine exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Swaziland dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), constituting a 5.5% share of total exports.

Swaziland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the maltodextrine and maltodextine syrup exports, with a CAGR of +18.6% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Swaziland (+35 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-32 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Swaziland ($X) remains the largest maltodextrine supplier in SADC, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the maltodextrine and maltodextine syrup imports, with a CAGR of +13.3% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+15 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
