Man-Made Filament Yarn Market Size in SADC

The SADC man-made filament yarn market surged to $X in 2021, rising by 28% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of man-made filament yarn increased by 33% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Swaziland represented the main exporter of man-made filament yarn in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 55% of total exports in 2021. Madagascar (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons). All these countries together took near 40% share of total exports. Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Swaziland decreased at an average annual rate of -12.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +9.6% from 2012-2021. Madagascar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Madagascar and Mauritius increased by +13 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Swaziland ($X) remains the largest man-made filament yarn supplier in SADC, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Swaziland totaled -14.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-15.9% per year) and Mauritius (+5.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -9.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 31%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Man-Made Filament Yarn Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of man-made filament yarn were imported in SADC; with an increase of 49% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 67%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the major importer of man-made filament yarn, generating 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together committing a 47% share of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +22.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported man-made filament yarn in SADC, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 12% share.

In South Africa, man-made filament yarn imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+1.5% per year) and Angola (+10.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
