Mango And Mangosteen Market Size in SADC

After two years of decline, the SADC mango and mangosteen market increased by 1.6% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Mango And Mangosteen Production in SADC

In value terms, mango and mangosteen production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 54% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Malawi (X tons) remains the largest mango and mangosteen producing country in SADC, accounting for 61% of total volume. Moreover, mango and mangosteen production in Malawi exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Madagascar (X tons), with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Malawi totaled +31.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Tanzania (+0.9% per year) and Madagascar (-0.3% per year).

In 2022, the average mango and mangosteen yield in SADC rose notably to X tons per ha, picking up by 5.6% on the year before. The yield indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mango and mangosteen yield decreased by -10.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 46% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas were harvested in SADC; leveling off at 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to mango and mangosteen production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Mango And Mangosteen Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas increased by 9.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 67%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mango and mangosteen exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 127%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest exporter of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, creating 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons) and Malawi (X tons), together committing a 17% share of total exports. Madagascar (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mango and mangosteen exports from South Africa stood at +10.3%. At the same time, Malawi (+81.3%), Mozambique (+46.2%), Swaziland (+40.4%) and Madagascar (+24.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +81.3% from 2012-2022. Mozambique (+9.6 p.p.), Malawi (+6.7 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.1 p.p.) and Swaziland (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mango and mangosteen supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malawi ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 4.2% share.

In South Africa, mango and mangosteen exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malawi (+101.1% per year) and Mozambique (+38.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 35%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Mango And Mangosteen Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, when their volume decreased by -16% to X tons. In general, imports, however, posted a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 60%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, mango and mangosteen imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 49%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 52% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Tanzania (10%) and Namibia (4.6%). Angola (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mango and mangosteen imports into South Africa stood at +21.5%. At the same time, Lesotho (+35.0%), Mozambique (+31.8%) and Botswana (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-2.6%), Angola (-8.2%) and Tanzania (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+42 p.p.), Mozambique (+1.8 p.p.) and Lesotho (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Botswana (-2.3 p.p.), Namibia (-3.1 p.p.), Angola (-5.6 p.p.) and Tanzania (-32.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Namibia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 84% of total imports. Mozambique, Angola, Lesotho and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.8%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +31.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -16.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
