Manuka Market Size in SADC
The SADC manuka market dropped to $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 5.7%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Manuka Production in SADC
In value terms, manuka production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production faced a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Manuka Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, manuka exports in SADC declined notably to X tons, which is down by -37.9% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 109% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, manuka exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 54%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Zambia was the key exporter of manuka in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 45% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) held a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (21%) and Madagascar (5.3%). Mozambique (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +125.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Zambia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 94% share of total exports. Madagascar and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4%.
Among the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +79.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Manuka Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of manuka, when their volume decreased by -50.3% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 45%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, manuka imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 61% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Namibia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons) - each finished at a 5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to manuka imports into South Africa stood at +1.9%. At the same time, Namibia (+23.1%), Lesotho (+19.3%), Seychelles (+18.4%), Mozambique (+16.3%), Botswana (+14.8%) and Mauritius (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Mauritius (+8.3 p.p.), Namibia (+6.1 p.p.) and Botswana (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-13.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Namibia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 74% share of total imports. Botswana, Lesotho, Seychelles and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
Among the main importing countries, Lesotho, with a CAGR of +21.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
