The SADC marble and travertine market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, marble and travertine production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 13%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of marble and travertine, when their volume increased by 21% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 83%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Namibia was the main exporter of marble and travertine in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), committing an 18% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble and travertine exports from Namibia stood at +5.0%. At the same time, Angola (+29.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +29.1% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Angola increased by +15 percentage points.
In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the largest marble and travertine supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Namibia stood at +7.7%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Angola totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+2.6%).

Imports in SADC
In 2021, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of marble and travertine, when their volume increased by 69% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 80% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), generating a 6.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Lesotho (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up 9.8% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +1.8% from 2012-2021. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lesotho (-7.6%), Mauritius (-14.9%) and Angola (-22.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Zimbabwe increased by +22 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported marble and travertine in SADC, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 5.6% share.
In South Africa, marble and travertine imports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-24.9% per year) and Zimbabwe (+5.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -24.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 20%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
