Matches Production in SADC

In value terms, matches production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 22%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, matches exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), mixing up a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to matches exports from South Africa stood at -9.4%. At the same time, Malawi (+30.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malawi increased by +14 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest matches supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malawi ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi stood at $X per ton.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, overseas purchases of matches increased by 7.3% to X tons, rising for the seventh year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +76.1% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, matches imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of matches imports in 2021 were Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together accounting for 74% of total import. Mozambique (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.3% share, followed by Zambia (5.2%). Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +22.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Angola ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 59% of total imports. Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +12.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 6.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
