The SADC mate market rose notably to $X in 2022, with an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a mild expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Mate Production in SADC
In value terms, mate production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 356% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of mate production was Zimbabwe (X tons), comprising approx. 95% of total volume. It was followed by Malawi (X kg), with a 2.8% share of total production.
In Zimbabwe, mate production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.
Mate Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of mate exported in SADC fell significantly to X kg, shrinking by -32.3% against the year before. Overall, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 752%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mate exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,835%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X kg), Tanzania (X kg), Namibia (X kg), Malawi (X kg), Zambia (X kg) and Botswana (X kg) represented the largest exporter of mate in SADC, creating 93% of total export. Madagascar (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +34.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest mate supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Malawi ($X), together comprising 69% of total exports.
Malawi, with a CAGR of +39.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 30% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 127% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mate Imports
Imports in SADC
Mate imports rose sharply to X tons in 2022, picking up by 14% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports saw mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 268% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, mate imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 325%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the major importer of mate in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 38% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (16%), Mozambique (13%) and Madagascar (5.9%). The following importers - Botswana (X kg) and Seychelles (X kg) - each amounted to a 4.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mate imports into South Africa stood at +19.9%. At the same time, Botswana (+30.1%), Madagascar (+20.8%), Mozambique (+18.2%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Seychelles (-6.7%) and Tanzania (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+31 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+12 p.p.), Mozambique (+10 p.p.), Madagascar (+4.8 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Seychelles and Tanzania saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -44.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mate in SADC, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +26.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+18.8% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+15.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -14.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 106%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
