In 2022, the average meat yield in SADC shrank modestly to X kg per head, with a decrease of X% on 2021 figures. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for meat production in SADC; stabilizing at 2021 figures. This number increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the number of producing animals increased by X%. Over the period under review, this number attained the peak level at X heads in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of meat increased by X% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after five years of decline. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, meat exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of meat, committing X% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (X%) and Botswana (X%). Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to meat exports from South Africa stood at X%. At the same time, Zambia (X%) and Tanzania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, meat imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Angola (X tons) was the largest importer of meat, mixing up X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons), together committing a X% share of total imports. Mozambique (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to meat imports into Angola stood at X%. At the same time, Mozambique (X%), Lesotho (X%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%) and Namibia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year.
