Market Size for Meat of Camels and Other Animals in SADC

The SADC market for meat of camels and other animals reached $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Production of Meat of Camels and Other Animals in SADC

In value terms, camel and other animal meat production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of camel and other animal meat production was Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), accounting for 44% of total volume. Moreover, camel and other animal meat production in Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, South Africa (X tons), threefold. Zambia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Democratic Republic of the Congo was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: South Africa (+1.8% per year) and Zambia (+0.7% per year).

In 2022, the average camel and other animal meat yield in SADC amounted to X tons per head, leveling off at the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the camel and other animal meat yield attained the maximum level at X tons per head in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, number of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production in SADC fell slightly to X heads, dropping by -1.9% on the previous year. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the number of producing animals increased by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number reached the maximum level at X heads in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports in SADC

For the third year in a row, SADC recorded decline in overseas shipments of meat of camels and other animals, which decreased by -67.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed a precipitous contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 132%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 128%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together creating a 33% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to camel and other animal meat exports from South Africa stood at -19.9%. At the same time, Swaziland (+18.8%) and Tanzania (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +18.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-24.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+14 p.p.) and Swaziland (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-13.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest camel and other animal meat supplier in SADC, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -16.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+12.4% per year) and Namibia (-26.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -29.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, camel and other animal meat export price decreased by -33.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 38%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Meat of Camels and Other Animals

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of meat of camels and other animals increased by 38% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 63%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 174% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tanzania (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) were the key importers of meat of camels and other animals in 2022, recording near 32% and 28% of total imports, respectively. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Botswana (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Namibia (X tons). All these countries together held near 28% share of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +58.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Zambia ($X), Botswana ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 56% share of total imports. Tanzania, Angola, Lesotho and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +33.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, camel and other animal meat import price increased by +41.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 69% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+14.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
