Market Size for Mechanical Shovels, Excavators And Shovel Loaders in SADC

For the third year in a row, the SADC mechanical shovel and excavator market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 21% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, showed a slight decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mechanical shovel and excavator production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 346% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of mechanical shovels, excavators and shovel loaders, when their volume increased by 593% to X units. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mechanical shovel and excavator exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X units, which was near 97% of total exports in 2021. Zambia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mechanical shovels, excavators and shovel loaders exports, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +6.4 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mechanical shovel and excavator supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports.

In South Africa, mechanical shovel and excavator exports declined by an average annual rate of -2.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -78.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 177% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per unit), while South Africa stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (-1.2%).

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of mechanical shovels, excavators and shovel loaders, when their volume decreased by -3.5% to X units. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.6% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, mechanical shovel and excavator imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 55% of total imports in 2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X units), Botswana (X units) and Tanzania (X units). All these countries together took near 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X units) and Zambia (X units) - each finished at an 8.8% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Namibia (+13.9%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.6%), Botswana (+4.9%) and Tanzania (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-8.7%) and Zambia (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Namibia and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +7.6, +4.4 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mechanical shovels, excavators and shovel loaders in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -5.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.4% per year) and Tanzania (+1.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 66% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
