In value terms, melamine resins exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 545%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa was the major exporter of melamine resins in primary forms in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 52% of total exports in 2021. Angola (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Botswana (X kg). All these countries together held approx. 46% share of total exports. Mozambique (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +890.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Botswana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 99% share of total exports. Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 0.5%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +258.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -14.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 67% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+30.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of melamine resins in primary forms imported in SADC surged to X tons, with an increase of 67% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, melamine resins imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a mild reduction. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of melamine resins in primary forms in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 74% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), mixing up a 21% share of total imports. Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to melamine resins imports into South Africa stood at -1.2%. At the same time, Malawi (+69.0%) and Angola (+38.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +69.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Malawi (+21 p.p.) and Angola (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-4.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -1.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malawi (+59.2% per year) and Angola (+21.0% per year).

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
