In value terms, men swimwear exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +91.2% against 2016 indices. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. Madagascar (X units) held a 5.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Swaziland (5.3%).

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the men’s swimwear (excluding of knitted or crocheted textiles) exports, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+12.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Madagascar (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+46 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Madagascar saw its share reduced by -33.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest men swimwear supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports.

In South Africa, men swimwear exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Madagascar (-15.8% per year) and Swaziland (-5.5% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

At the same time, Namibia (+9.9%) and Mauritius (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +19 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported men’s swimwear (excluding of knitted or crocheted textiles) in SADC, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 4.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +7.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Namibia (+5.2% per year) and Mauritius (-1.3% per year).

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, surging by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
