Mercury Market Size in SADC

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the SADC mercury market, when its value increased by 205% to $X. Overall, consumption enjoyed a prominent increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Mercury Production in SADC

In value terms, mercury production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -18.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of mercuries exported in SADC reduced notably to X kg, dropping by -43.6% on the previous year. In general, exports recorded a sharp setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 788% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mercury exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 1,446%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X kg) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2021.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mercuries exports, with a CAGR of -22.9% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest mercury supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -31.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 108% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 179%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -11.1% per year.

Mercury Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of mercuries increased by 391% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports showed a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mercury imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 250%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the main importer of mercuries in SADC, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 88% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), creating a 10% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +12.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+24.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of Zimbabwe (+6.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mercuries in SADC, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 9.2% share of total imports.

In South Africa, mercury imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -50.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-8.6%).
