Millet Market Size in SADC

The SADC millet market rose slightly to $X in 2022, increasing by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Millet Production in SADC

In value terms, millet production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 64%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Tanzania (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of millet production, accounting for 49% of total volume. Moreover, millet production in Tanzania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Namibia (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Malawi (X tons), with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Tanzania was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+4.9% per year) and Malawi (+3.3% per year).

The average millet yield contracted to X kg per ha in 2022, shrinking by -4.8% against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the millet yield attained the maximum level at X kg per ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the millet harvested area in SADC expanded sharply to X ha, with an increase of 7.3% against the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 24%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the millet harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Millet Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of millet, when their volume decreased by -25.2% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 100%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, millet exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 122% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Tanzania (X tons) was the main exporter of millet, constituting 71% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons). All these countries together held near 24% share of total exports. The following exporters - Malawi (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.7% share of total exports.

Exports from Tanzania increased at an average annual rate of +25.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+49.8%), Botswana (+36.1%), South Africa (+14.3%) and Malawi (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +49.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Zimbabwe (+11 p.p.) and Tanzania (+9.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malawi (-6.2 p.p.) and South Africa (-15 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest millet supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X), with a combined 89% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +35.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+19.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Millet Imports

Imports in SADC

Millet imports reduced sharply to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -18.7% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, millet imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 88% of total imports in 2022. Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to millet imports into South Africa stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Angola (+75.3%), Tanzania (+19.8%) and Mauritius (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +75.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-15.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+16 p.p.) and Angola (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Namibia saw its share reduced by -19.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported millet in SADC, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +4.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+56.5% per year) and Mauritius (+4.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 51% against the previous year. Import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
