Molasse Market Size in SADC

The SADC molasse market fell slightly to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Molasse Production in SADC

In value terms, molasse production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 22%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Molasse Exports

Exports in SADC

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of molasses decreased by -89.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 923% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, molasse exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 209%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Mozambique (X tons) represented the largest exporter of molasses, making up 56% of total exports. Zambia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 25% share, followed by Tanzania (15%). South Africa (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the molasses exports, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-3.6%) and Tanzania (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mozambique (+51 p.p.) and Zambia (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Tanzania (-3.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Zambia ($X) and Tanzania ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 89% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +12.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 123% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep slump. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Molasse Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, after six years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of molasses, when their volume increased by 4% to X tons. In general, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, molasse imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 59%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of molasses in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 39% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together generating a 58% share of total imports. Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +65.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest molasse importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Namibia ($X) and Malawi ($X), together comprising 71% of total imports. Tanzania, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +64.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+12.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
