In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 232%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, monoammonium phosphate exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 228% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Mozambique was the largest exporter of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 30% share of total exports.
Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the monoammonium phosphate (MAP) exports, with a CAGR of +162.6% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa (-17.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mozambique (+69 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-70.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest monoammonium phosphate supplying countries in SADC were Mozambique ($X) and South Africa ($X).
In terms of the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +196.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 19% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, monoammonium phosphate export price increased by +112.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 35%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique stood at $X per ton.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) were imported in SADC; which is down by -1.6% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, monoammonium phosphate imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 60% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), comprising a 32% share of total imports. Zambia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +91.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported monoammonium phosphate (MAP) in SADC, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 29% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +9.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+40.2% per year) and Mozambique (+102.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 27% against the previous year. Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, monoammonium phosphate import price increased by +90.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 50%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mozambique ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) and Zambia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
