Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a perceptible decline. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of motor graders and levellers exported in SADC reduced to X units, which is down by -14.4% compared with the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, motor grader exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 65% of total exports in 2022. Botswana (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.2% share, followed by Zambia (6.3%), Mozambique (5.5%) and Zimbabwe (4.7%). The following exporters - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Malawi (X units), Angola (X units) and Lesotho (X units) - each reached a 7.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to motor grader exports from South Africa stood at -9.0%. At the same time, Lesotho (+14.9%), Mozambique (+13.3%), Zambia (+12.3%) and Zimbabwe (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-1.8%), Angola (-2.2%), Botswana (-3.8%) and Malawi (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+5.5 p.p.), Mozambique (+4.8 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+3.9 p.p.) and Botswana (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest motor grader supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 5.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -7.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (+12.6% per year) and Zambia (+9.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 9.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 34%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lesotho (+21.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of motor graders and levellers imported in SADC expanded significantly to X units, with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 36%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, motor grader imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the key importer of motor graders and levellers in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was near 37% of total imports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Angola (X units). All these countries together held approx. 43% share of total imports. Zambia (X units), Namibia (X units), Madagascar (X units), Mozambique (X units), Botswana (X units) and Malawi (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to motor grader imports into South Africa stood at -9.8%. At the same time, Madagascar (+10.6%), Zimbabwe (+8.1%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.2%) and Tanzania (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Botswana (-2.4%), Malawi (-3.1%), Namibia (-11.3%), Angola (-12.3%), Mozambique (-12.9%) and Zambia (-13.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zimbabwe (+13 p.p.), Tanzania (+8.1 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.9 p.p.) and Madagascar (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-2.4 p.p.), Mozambique (-2.8 p.p.), Zambia (-4.7 p.p.), Angola (-5.4 p.p.) and South Africa (-14.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported motor graders and levellers in SADC, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+0.5% per year) and Zimbabwe (+7.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 71% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per unit), while Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
