In 2021, approx. X tons of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) were imported in SADC; waning by -2.8% against the year before. In general, imports saw a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 11%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 90% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Angola (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - each reached a 6% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+10.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) in SADC, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 1.1% share of total imports.

In South Africa, motor vehicle engine imports declined by an average annual rate of -3.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-12.5% per year) and Tanzania (+7.0% per year).

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
