From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 291%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) in SADC, creating 98% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) exports, with a CAGR of -5.9% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest motor vehicle engine supplier in SADC.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, motor vehicle engine export price decreased by -9.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 56%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2021, approx. X tons of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) were imported in SADC; waning by -2.8% against the year before. In general, imports saw a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 11%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 90% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Angola (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - each reached a 6% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+10.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) in SADC, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 1.1% share of total imports.

In South Africa, motor vehicle engine imports declined by an average annual rate of -3.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-12.5% per year) and Tanzania (+7.0% per year).

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 12%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
