Snow Motor Vehicle Market Size in SADC

In 2022, the SADC snow motor vehicle market increased by 63% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X units of motor vehicles for travelling on snow or golf cars were exported in SADC; which is down by -17.4% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 93%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, snow motor vehicle exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, exports faced a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 163% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 84% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Seychelles (X units), generating a 5.4% share of total exports. Malawi (X units) and Mauritius (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to snow motor vehicle exports from South Africa stood at -18.1%. At the same time, Seychelles (+14.9%) and Malawi (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest snow motor vehicle supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Seychelles ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -12.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Seychelles (+19.2% per year) and Mauritius (+3.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 36% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, snow motor vehicle export price increased by +85.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Malawi ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of motor vehicles for travelling on snow or golf cars increased by 87% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, snow motor vehicle imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a slight contraction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 81% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), creating a 5.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Angola (X units), Seychelles (X units) and Madagascar (X units) - each accounted for an 8.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to snow motor vehicle imports into South Africa stood at -2.6%. At the same time, Madagascar (+20.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.8%) and Mauritius (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Seychelles (-3.9%) and Angola (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+13 p.p.), Mauritius (+3.4 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.8 p.p.) and Madagascar (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported motor vehicles for travelling on snow or golf cars in SADC, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 7.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +2.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+11.0% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.2% per year).
