Mushroom And Truffle Market Size in SADC
The SADC mushroom and truffle market reached $X in 2022, increasing by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a resilient expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Mushroom And Truffle Production in SADC
In value terms, mushroom and truffle production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The country with the largest volume of mushroom and truffle production was South Africa (X tons), comprising approx. 88% of total volume. Moreover, mushroom and truffle production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Madagascar (X tons), tenfold.
In South Africa, mushroom and truffle production increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Madagascar (+2.6% per year) and Zimbabwe (+3.1% per year).
Mushroom And Truffle Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of mushrooms and truffles were exported in SADC; falling by -22.4% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 29%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mushroom and truffle exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), comprising a 5% share of total exports. Malawi (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+22.4%) and Malawi (+15.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania and Malawi increased by +4.6 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mushroom and truffle supplier in SADC, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 6.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 1% share.
In South Africa, mushroom and truffle exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+15.1% per year) and Zambia (-11.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mushroom and truffle export price increased by +105.9% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Mushroom And Truffle Imports
Imports in SADC
For the third year in a row, SADC recorded decline in supplies from abroad of mushrooms and truffles, which decreased by -5.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mushroom and truffle imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 16%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Botswana (X tons) was the key importer of mushrooms and truffles, creating 34% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Swaziland (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons), together committing a 53% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mushroom and truffle imports into Botswana stood at -3.2%. At the same time, Mozambique (+7.3%) and Mauritius (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012-2022. Lesotho experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-1.4%), Swaziland (-5.1%) and Namibia (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+8.8 p.p.), Mozambique (+3.9 p.p.) and Zambia (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-7.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X), Botswana ($X) and Swaziland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 64% of total imports. Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +9.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
