The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 107%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X tons of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts were exported in SADC; growing by 4.7% against the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 18%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, nail and bolt exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the major exporter of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts, mixing up 80% of total exports. Angola (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (5.6%). Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts. At the same time, Angola (+55.0%), Zambia (+31.6%) and Tanzania (+19.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +55.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Angola, Tanzania and Zambia increased by +11, +4.3 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest nail and bolt supplier in SADC, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 1.8% share.
In South Africa, nail and bolt exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+38.3% per year) and Zambia (+13.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
South Africa was the largest importer of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Tanzania (9.8%), Zimbabwe (6.9%), Angola (5.3%), Mozambique (5%) and Madagascar (4.9%). Zambia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.9%), Mozambique (+5.4%), Zimbabwe (+3.7%) and Madagascar (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-1.8%), Tanzania (-4.1%) and Zambia (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique and Zimbabwe increased by +4.8, +1.7 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.0% per year) and Zimbabwe (+3.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
