Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2021. Swaziland (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to natural bitumen and asphalt exports from South Africa stood at -11.2%. At the same time, Zambia (+67.2%) and Swaziland (+18.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. In South Africa, natural bitumen and asphalt exports plunged by an average annual rate of -9.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (+18.5% per year) and Zambia (+54.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Natural bitumen and asphalt imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, growing by 51% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, showed a slight decline. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, natural bitumen and asphalt imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Zimbabwe (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) represented the largest importer of natural bitumen and asphalt in SADC, creating 85% of total import. The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +31.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X), South Africa ($X) and Botswana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 66% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +27.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 41% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
