South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), creating a 10% share of total exports. The following exporters - Seychelles (X units) and Swaziland (X units) - each finished at a 4.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to needles, catheters, cannulae exports from South Africa stood at +8.0%. At the same time, Seychelles (+118.6%), Tanzania (+46.5%) and Swaziland (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Seychelles emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +118.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania and Seychelles increased by +9.3 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest needles, catheters, cannulae supplier in SADC, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Seychelles, with a 6.1% share.

In South Africa, needles, catheters, cannulae exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+67.8% per year) and Seychelles (+84.1% per year).

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 11% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 77%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+14.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

Needles, catheters, cannulae imports declined to X units in 2021, waning by -2.2% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, needles, catheters, cannulae imports expanded to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the main importer of needles, catheters, cannulae in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was near 54% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Zambia (7.4%), Angola (5.7%) and Mauritius (4.5%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Malawi (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of needles, catheters, cannulae. At the same time, Mauritius (+28.6%), Zambia (+10.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+10.0%) and Zimbabwe (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.6% from 2012-2021. Malawi and Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zambia (+4.3 p.p.), Mauritius (+4 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-13.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported needles, catheters, cannulae in SADC, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 4.4% share.
