Newspaper Market Size in SADC

The SADC newspaper market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 9.5%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Newspaper Production in SADC

In value terms, newspaper production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Newspaper Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of newspapers, journals and periodicals increased by 22% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, newspaper exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the largest exporter of newspapers, journals and periodicals in SADC, achieving 99% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the newspapers, journals and periodicals exports, with a CAGR of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa (+4.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest newspaper supplier in SADC.

In South Africa, newspaper exports shrank by an average annual rate of -6.0% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at less than $X per unit in 2022, surging by 5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -8.6% per year.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of newspapers, journals and periodicals increased by 35% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after eight years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, newspaper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the eleven major importers of newspapers, journals and periodicals, namely South Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Lesotho, Tanzania, Angola and Swaziland, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +5.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported newspapers, journals and periodicals in SADC, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -15.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Namibia (+6.5% per year) and Mozambique (+0.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 39%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
