Non-cellular polypropylene film exports declined notably to X tons in 2021, waning by -27.9% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film exports shrank to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -9.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), generating an 8.6% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malawi (+28.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Malawi (+7.2 p.p.) and South Africa (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-cellular polypropylene film supplier in SADC, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malawi ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports.

In South Africa, non-cellular polypropylene film exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (-1.4%).

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip, when their volume increased by 21% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons) held a 9.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (9%), Zambia (5.4%), Mauritius (5.4%) and Madagascar (4.6%). Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Madagascar (+30.7%), Angola (+17.5%), Mauritius (+15.8%), Zimbabwe (+11.6%), Zambia (+11.1%) and Tanzania (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +30.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Zimbabwe (+4.9 p.p.), Madagascar (+4.1 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.9 p.p.), Mauritius (+3.6 p.p.), Angola (+2.9 p.p.) and Zambia (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-22.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip in SADC, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 7.9% share.

In South Africa, non-cellular polypropylene film imports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+8.1% per year) and Tanzania (+6.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
