Non-Electrical Lamp Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC non-electrical lamp market increased by 0.1% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-electrical lamp production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 204% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings increased by 36% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-electrical lamp exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight reduction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. Namibia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings exports, with a CAGR of -9.3% from 2012 to 2021. Namibia (-34.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +27 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-electrical lamp supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 0.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a prominent expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.4%).

Imports in SADC

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings, when their volume decreased by -1.7% to X units. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +45.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 57%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-electrical lamp imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 47%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importer of non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was near 51% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Zimbabwe (X units), together committing a 31% share of total imports. Zambia (X units), Botswana (X units) and Madagascar (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+20.2%), Madagascar (+18.3%), Botswana (+11.7%), Zambia (+11.3%) and Tanzania (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+5.5 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.8 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+3.5 p.p.), Zambia (+2.3 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.2 p.p.) and Botswana (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (-1.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an 8.2% share.

In South Africa, non-electrical lamp imports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (-7.1% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, rising by 27% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
