Exports in SADC

In 2021, overseas shipments of non-electronic hydro-, hygro-, psychrometers decreased by -11.9% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-electronic hydro- and hygrometers exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), constituting a 12% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - each reached a 5.1% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+24.5%) and Mauritius (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2012-2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+63 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -10.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-electronic hydro- and hygrometers supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 1.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 1.1% share.

In South Africa, non-electronic hydro- and hygrometers exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (+11.4% per year) and Mauritius (+1.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -20.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 181% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+26.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X units of non-electronic hydro-, hygro-, psychrometers were imported in SADC; with a decrease of -2.4% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 117%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-electronic hydro- and hygrometers imports declined to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 50%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units), distantly followed by Angola (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Mozambique (X units) were the largest importers of non-electronic hydro-, hygro-, psychrometers, together achieving 82% of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (X units), Zambia (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) - together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +17.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-electronic hydro-, hygro-, psychrometers in SADC, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+12.3% per year) and Zimbabwe (+7.9% per year).

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
