Non-Lawn Mower Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC non-lawn mower market increased by 8.6% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Non-Lawn Mower Production in SADC

In value terms, non-lawn mower production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, purchases abroad of non-lawn mowers and cutter bars increased by 18% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +47.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 46%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-lawn mower imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X units, which was near 77% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X units), comprising an 8.4% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X units), Botswana (X units), Namibia (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) - together made up 12% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-lawn mower imports into South Africa stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Botswana (+9.4%), Namibia (+8.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.5%), Zimbabwe (+8.3%) and Angola (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Zimbabwe increased by +6.1 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-lawn mowers and cutter bars in SADC, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 5.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 3% share.

In South Africa, non-lawn mower imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+0.5% per year) and Angola (+3.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
