Exports in SADC
Non-medical x-ray exports declined modestly to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -3.5% on the year before. In general, exports showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 136% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-medical x-ray exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. Malawi (X kg) and Mozambique (X kg) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -13.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+43.7%) and Malawi (+13.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +43.7% from 2012-2021. Malawi (+2.5 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-medical x-ray supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malawi ($X), with a 1.7% share of total exports.
In South Africa, non-medical x-ray exports contracted by an average annual rate of -5.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malawi (+21.3% per year) and Mozambique (+37.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 106%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, overseas purchases of non-medical x-rays decreased by -13.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, non-medical x-ray imports totaled $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the largest importer of non-medical x-rays in SADC, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 48% of total imports in 2021. Mozambique (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (17%) and Tanzania (5.4%). Mauritius (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-medical x-ray imports into South Africa stood at -6.2%. At the same time, Mozambique (+11.3%) and Angola (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.3% from 2012-2021. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-4.4%), Mauritius (-15.1%) and Zimbabwe (-19.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mozambique and Angola increased by +13 and +10 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-medical x-rays in SADC, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -4.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+6.3% per year) and Mozambique (+21.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 18% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-medical x-ray import price increased by +41.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
