Non-Rolled Bitumen Products Market Size in SADC

The SADC non-rolled bitumen products market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. The total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -4.2% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Non-Rolled Bitumen Products Production in SADC

In value terms, non-rolled bitumen products production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -4.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Non-Rolled Bitumen Products Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, non-rolled bitumen products exports in SADC declined sharply to X tons, which is down by -31.8% compared with the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-rolled bitumen products exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 177%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), committing a 7% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -21.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+6.2 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -8.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-rolled bitumen products supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports.

In South Africa, non-rolled bitumen products exports contracted by an average annual rate of -10.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (-12.5% per year) and Botswana (+1.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 54% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+14.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Non-Rolled Bitumen Products Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of non-rolled bitumen products was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-rolled bitumen products imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Tanzania represented the key importer of non-rolled bitumen products in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 52% of total imports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons). All these countries together took near 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Seychelles (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-rolled bitumen products imports into Tanzania stood at -9.6%. At the same time, Mozambique (+16.0%) and Seychelles (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +16.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-3.3%), Mauritius (-5.0%), South Africa (-9.7%), Zambia (-10.7%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+7.1 p.p.), Seychelles (+2.6 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania saw its share reduced by -2.1% and -5.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-rolled bitumen products importing markets in SADC were Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), together comprising 55% of total imports. Mauritius, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola and Seychelles lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +6.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -30.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 68%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
