In 2022, the SADC market for non-soap washing and cleaning preparations decreased by -6.6% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-soap washing and cleaning preparations production contracted notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, non-soap washing and cleaning preparations exports dropped to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +88.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 29%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together achieving a 26% share of total exports. Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-soap washing and cleaning preparations exports from South Africa stood at +5.7%. At the same time, Tanzania (+55.6%), Zambia (+22.8%) and Mauritius (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +55.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Tanzania (+12 p.p.) and Zambia (+9.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mauritius (-1.5 p.p.) and South Africa (-20.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-soap washing and cleaning preparations supplier in SADC, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with an 8% share.

In South Africa, non-soap washing and cleaning preparations exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+18.5% per year) and Tanzania (+45.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of non-soap washing and cleaning preparations increased by 1.7% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 23%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-soap washing and cleaning preparations imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Mozambique (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main importers of non-soap washing and cleaning preparations in 2022, finishing at near 22% and 19% of total imports, respectively. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Zambia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 44% share of total imports. Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-soap washing and cleaning preparations in SADC, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 9.2% share.

In South Africa, non-soap washing and cleaning preparations imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+12.8% per year) and Mozambique (+6.3% per year).
