Non-Wheat Flour Production in SADC
In value terms, non-wheat flour production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Non-Wheat Flour Exports
Exports in SADC
For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded decline in shipments abroad of non-wheat flours, which decreased by -12.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 94% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-wheat flour exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 42%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), committing a 5.7% share of total exports. Lesotho (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of non-wheat flours. At the same time, Lesotho (+15.0%) and Tanzania (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Tanzania and Lesotho increased by +5.7, +3 and +2.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-wheat flour supplier in SADC, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Lesotho, with a 2.6% share.
In South Africa, non-wheat flour exports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+8.7% per year) and Lesotho (+5.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 19%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Non-Wheat Flour Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, overseas purchases of non-wheat flours decreased by -5.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +45.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 25%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, non-wheat flour imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +53.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 43%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Angola (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) was the main importer of non-wheat flours in SADC, creating 90% of total import. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), mixing up a 7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +31.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Lesotho ($X) and Angola ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 79% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +45.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 2.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 22%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
