Overall, imports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, air conditioning machine imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 52% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.6% share, followed by Angola (7.6%), Botswana (5.9%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (4.8%). Mozambique (X units), Namibia (X units), Seychelles (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Zambia (X units) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+12.8%), Namibia (+4.9%), Botswana (+3.4%) and Zambia (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-1.4%), Seychelles (-4.1%), Tanzania (-7.1%), Mozambique (-9.5%) and Angola (-20.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, Botswana and Namibia increased by +15, +4, +3.8, +3.7 and +3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-window or wall air conditioning machines in SADC, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -2.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-17.4% per year) and Mauritius (-1.3% per year).
