Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +111.2% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, non-woven glass fibre articles exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +115.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2021. Zambia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-woven glass fibre articles exports from South Africa stood at +6.9%. At the same time, Zambia (+40.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +40.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa decreased by -2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia totaled $X per ton.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of non-woven glass fibre webs, felts, mattresses and boards was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-woven glass fibre articles imports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 73% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), committing a 9.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Angola (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-woven glass fibre articles imports into South Africa stood at +2.1%. At the same time, Tanzania (+18.7%), Madagascar (+15.0%) and Mauritius (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +18.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mozambique (-10.4%), Zambia (-10.8%) and Angola (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+13 p.p.), Mauritius (+4 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia, Mozambique and Angola saw its share reduced by -3.8%, -4.1% and -11.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-woven glass fibre webs, felts, mattresses and boards in SADC, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +5.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+9.2% per year) and Angola (-17.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
