Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, nonwoven fabric exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest exporter of nonwoven fabrics in SADC, generating 95% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nonwoven fabrics exports, with a CAGR of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest nonwoven fabric supplier in SADC.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of nonwoven fabrics, when their volume decreased by -6.7% to X tons. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +14.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, nonwoven fabric imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 28%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 64% of total imports. Angola (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Mozambique (5.3%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (4.5%). The following importers - Tanzania (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - together made up 5.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to nonwoven fabric imports into South Africa stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Mozambique (+40.7%), Angola (+33.6%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.9%), Madagascar (+17.1%) and Tanzania (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +40.7% from 2012-2022. Angola (+15 p.p.), Mozambique (+5 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -23.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nonwoven fabrics in SADC, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+26.1% per year) and Mozambique (+30.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 2.2%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
