Nucleic Acid Market Size in SADC

The SADC nucleic acid market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, falling by -2.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -7.3% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total production indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +22.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 54%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Nucleic Acid Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of nucleic acids and their salts were exported in SADC; falling by -19.7% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports saw a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 206%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nucleic acid exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 255%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Swaziland (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nucleic acids and their salts exports, with a CAGR of -4.3% from 2012 to 2022. Swaziland (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest nucleic acid supplier in SADC, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -30.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 69%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.9%).

Nucleic Acid Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of nucleic acids and their salts, when their volume decreased by -28.9% to X tons. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, nucleic acid imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the major importer of nucleic acids and their salts, committing 85% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), making up a 12% share of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of nucleic acids and their salts. At the same time, Swaziland (+16.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012-2022. Swaziland (+9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -7.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nucleic acids and their salts in SADC, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 3.4% share of total imports.

In South Africa, nucleic acid imports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 17%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Swaziland totaled $X per ton.
