South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), creating a 24% share of total exports. Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) imports shrank to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +62.3% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

South Africa prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 84% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +24.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Madagascar (+76.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+19.1%), Namibia (+6.9%) and Mauritius (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +76.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-16.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+39 p.p.) and Madagascar (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Namibia, Mauritius and Angola saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -2.2% and -28.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
