In 2021, the SADC preserved olive market increased by 0.9% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. Exports in SADC
In 2021, shipments abroad of olives prepared or preserved was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 67%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved olive exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 77%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of olives prepared or preserved. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+38.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zimbabwe increased by +2.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest preserved olive supplier in SADC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 1.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -1.3%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-2.1%).
Preserved Olive Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of olives prepared or preserved, when their volume increased by 38% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved olive imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Angola (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) dominates imports structure, together mixing up 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons), together mixing up a 13% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +17.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest preserved olive importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Mauritius ($X), together comprising 80% of total imports. These countries were followed by Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar and Tanzania, which together accounted for a further 12%.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +12.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 8.3%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
