Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, x-ray examination preparations exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 78%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2022. Swaziland (X kg) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Mauritius (X kg). All these countries together took near 15% share of total exports.

Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -1.2% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, x-ray examination preparations imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +37.1% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 79% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), creating a 13% share of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to x-ray examination preparations imports into South Africa stood at +6.4%. At the same time, Tanzania (+73.9%) and Mauritius (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +73.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania increased by +13 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations in SADC, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 6.8% share of total imports.
