The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by X% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons), together generating a X% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (X%), Namibia (X%) and Tanzania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Namibia, Mauritius and Tanzania increased by X, X and X percentage points, respectively.

In 2022, overseas purchases of optical fibers, bundles and cables decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

The following importers - Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - each resulted at a X% share of total imports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the optical fibers, bundles and cables imports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (X%), Angola (X%), Zambia (X%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), Tanzania (X%) and Mozambique (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of South Africa (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mozambique (X p.p.) and Tanzania (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Angola ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined X% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Zambia and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
Zambia, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
