Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of oriented strandboard (OSB) increased by 31% to X cubic meters, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 141%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, oriented strandboard (OSB) exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 89%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X cubic meters, which was near 92% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Swaziland (X cubic meters) and Namibia (X cubic meters) - each recorded a 7.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to oriented strandboard (OSB) exports from South Africa stood at -1.2%. At the same time, Namibia (+53.4%) and Swaziland (+15.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +53.4% from 2012-2021. Namibia (+3.7 p.p.) and Swaziland (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest oriented strandboard (OSB) supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -4.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+47.1% per year) and Swaziland (-13.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 24%. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while Swaziland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, the amount of oriented strandboard (OSB) imported in SADC surged to X cubic meters, growing by 33% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, oriented strandboard (OSB) imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate strong growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X cubic meters, which was approx. 65% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 6.5% share, followed by Angola (6.3%) and Botswana (5.3%). Namibia (X cubic meters), Malawi (X cubic meters) and Lesotho (X cubic meters) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +19.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malawi (+25.8%), Botswana (+19.8%), Tanzania (+13.3%), Angola (+7.6%) and Namibia (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lesotho (-9.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+24 p.p.), Botswana (+2 p.p.) and Malawi (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola, Namibia and Lesotho saw its share reduced by -3.9%, -4.7% and -16.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oriented strandboard (OSB) in SADC, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 5.5% share.
In South Africa, oriented strandboard (OSB) imports increased at an average annual rate of +20.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Botswana (+22.7% per year) and Namibia (+1.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per cubic meter), while Lesotho ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
