Exports in SADC
For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in shipments abroad of other cyclic hydrocarbons, which increased by 122% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports recorded a tangible increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cyclic hydrocarbons exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2021. Swaziland (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+52.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +52.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+43 p.p.) and Swaziland (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cyclic hydrocarbons supplier in SADC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports.
In South Africa, cyclic hydrocarbons exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-3.1%).
Cyclic Hydrocarbons Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of other cyclic hydrocarbons, when their volume increased by 20% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 205% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cyclic hydrocarbons imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importer of other cyclic hydrocarbons in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 42% of total imports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malawi (12%), Zambia (9%) and Swaziland (7.3%). The following importers - Mozambique (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - each recorded a 3.4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported other cyclic hydrocarbons in SADC, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -6.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+9.4% per year) and Zimbabwe (+10.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
