Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, boron oxide and boric acid exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), generating a 7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to boron oxide and boric acid exports from South Africa stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Zambia (+35.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Zambia increased by +65 and +6.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest boron oxide and boric acid supplier in SADC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 2.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -2.4%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 24%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+2.2%).
Imports of Oxides Of Boron and Boric Acids
Imports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X tons of oxides of boron and boric acids were imported in SADC; dropping by -6% on 2020. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -18.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 67%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, boron oxide and boric acid imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of oxides of boron and boric acids. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+17.8%) and Tanzania (+12.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +17.8% from 2012-2021. Tanzania (+2.4 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oxides of boron and boric acids in SADC, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 4.5% share of total imports.
In South Africa, boron oxide and boric acid imports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+11.0% per year) and Zimbabwe (+9.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 25% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild setback. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (-1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
