Ethylene Oxide Market Size in SADC

The SADC ethylene oxide market surged to $X in 2022, jumping by 22% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of oxirane (ethylene oxide) exported in SADC contracted significantly to X tons, falling by -24.3% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 1,448%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ethylene oxide exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 268% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X tons), together resulting at 100% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the oxirane (ethylene oxide) exports, with a CAGR of -14.7% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest ethylene oxide supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -9.6%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 329% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a strong increase. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +6.0% per year.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of oxirane (ethylene oxide), when their volume increased by 13% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 115%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ethylene oxide imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the main importer of oxirane (ethylene oxide), making up 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Malawi (X tons), together creating a 44% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ethylene oxide imports into South Africa stood at -6.2%. At the same time, Angola (+26.0%), Malawi (+25.5%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+22.1%) and Tanzania (+14.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +26.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Angola (+20 p.p.), Tanzania (+10 p.p.), Malawi (+7.5 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-38.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oxirane (ethylene oxide) in SADC, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -2.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+6.4% per year) and Tanzania (+16.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
